Technology Background

The AXERDISK^® family consists of a series of stand-alone external disk subsystems of sizes ranging from 36GB to 288GB SCSI storage devices. Our line of external storage subsystems is available in versions supporting 3.5 inch and 5.25-inch form factor, full or half-height devices of range single, twin and dwarf.

Each AXERDISK^® is constructed of the most durable materials available and appropriate for the specific Data Silo model (materials include steel and aluminum). Each chassis has a power-on LED indicator, drive activity and drive power LED indicators, and contains one or more highly rated, enhanced power supply and cooling fan(s). The AXERDISK^® is available in a variety of models which support 50-pin Fast Narrow, 68-pin Wide, Wide Ultra, Wide Ultra2 and Wide Ultra160 devices.

As options to the AXERDISK^® casing enclosures, AVIT Technologies offers a variety of external SCSI cables, and a selection of Single-ended and Low Voltage Differential/S.E. (switching) terminators. Interconnect SCSI cable kits, which include terminators, are available to accommodate most host system configurations. International power cables are available as required, upon request.

The AXERDISK^®DS100 was created to provide a durable and versatile housing for 3.5 and 5.25 inch SCSI devices. The DS100 is constructed of rugged steel, in comparison with the Data Stacker DS60 (which is constructed of metal-shielded plastic). The DS100 family provides multiple bay options, single and dual I/O options, in addition to chassis paint color.

Product Description:

 

The AXERDISK^® is a single, dual or quad-bay, stand-alone enclosure for housing 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch half-height SCSI devices. The AXERDISK^® can also be used with full-height SCSI devices. Each AXERDISK^® includes one device-mounting bracket per bay, for mounting 3.5-inch drives into its 5.25-inch bays. The AXERDISK^® is constructed of rugged steel and designed for durable, reliable, high-capacity storage with a variety of external host connections.
 

The AXERDISK^® comes equipped with an energy efficient, auto-ranging, enhanced 40watt (single-bay version) or 65watt (dual-bay version) power supply. The quad-bay versions of the AXERDISK^® are equipped with two 65watt power supplies. The AXERDISK^®withstands an operating temperature of 50ºC (122ºF) and a storage temperature of up to 75ºC (167ºF).
 

AXERDISK^® configurations are available with external connections for HD50, HD68, or VHDCI (used for Ultra2 and Ultra160 applications). AXERDISK^® part numbers specify the SCSI connection options, the chassis color White, and the number of peripheral bays as follows:

 

 

AVIT Technologies also provides external SCSI cables and terminators with a variety of 50-pin and 68-pin configurations designed especially for use with the DS100 chassis and capable of interfacing to several standard hosts. Optional DS100 accessories include device interfAXERDISK adapters for accommodating 80-pin SCA drives.

• Question: How many SCSI peripherals can I run from AXERDISK^®?
  Answer: Each AXERDISK^®supports one SCSI device per bay, so AXERDISK^® can support one to four SCSI devices.  AXERDISK^® four bays can accommodate up to six devices. Up to 15 devices (Wide, Wide Ultra, Wide Ultra2 and Ultra160) can be attained by daisy chaining multiple AXERDISK^® chassis.
   
• Question: What type of power supply is inside?
  Answer: The AXERDISK^® uses energy efficient 40 to 65 watt power supplies:
  1-Bay AXERDISK^®: (1) 40 watt power supply;
  2-Bays AXERDISK^®: (1) 65 watt power supply;
  4-Bays AXERDISK^®: (2) 65 watt power supplies.
  These values represent the continuous, "rated" wattage for AXERDISK^® power supplies. Maximum, peak wattage for the 40 watt power supply is 60 watts; peak wattage for the 65 watt power supply is 135 watts. Power supplies are capable of providing peak wattage during spin-up of high performance drives.
   
• Question: Will AXERDISK^® power supply supports my 3.5-inch (5.25-inch) drive(s)?
  Answer: The DS100 peripheral bays support all 3.5-inch (and 5.25-inch) devices that we have tested.
   
• Question: Can I put a Quantum DLT4000 into an AXERDISK^® 2-bay?
  Answer: The DLT drive you mention has a 9-inch depth (length). Yes, your DLT will fit into any AXERDISK^® two, four or nine-bay chassis. The drive mounting depth is at least 9.75 inches (if not greater) in our two, four and nine-bay models.
   
• Question: Is the AXERDISK^® CE-certified?
  Answer: Yes, AXERDISK^® is *CE, *UL, *CSA, and TüV-approved and is designed to meet FCC class B.
  
   
• Question: What hard disk type do you use in AXERDISK^®? 
  Answer: Using only IBM UltraStar^TM or Seagate CHEETAH^TM 73LP (10KRPM), are among the fastest in Ultra-160SCSI/160 (LVD-SCSI Single-connector interface), with up to a FAST 200MB/sec data rate & an average seek-time as fast as 5.1msec.
  
   
• Question: How reliable is AXERDISK^®?      
  Answer: With our very own (ORT) On-going Reliability Test, (tested at peak-wattage from 40 to 65 watt power supply for a straight 48-hours with multiple read & write) on SUN UNIX, AXERDISK^® are designed & tested to work across platforms like: SUN UNIX, LINUX, IBM AIX, HP-UX, SGI & MS-WINDOWS XP Professional. If you are using it for UNIX one moment, & then to MS-WINDOWS XP Professional the next (with proper configuration), simply plug-&-play. • Question: To put it simply, what do I get?
